Submission Instructions for Final Version

In order to assemble the proceedings in time, we need the following items  by June 15, 2003 (STRICT deadline).

  1. A PDF file according to the formatting instructions given below.
  2. Name the file as IDCorrespondence_author.pdf (e.g., 100_Papadias.pdf for a paper with submission ID 100, whose correspondence author is Papadias) and send it via email to vldb2003@informatik.uni-rostock.de. For submissions without an ID include the type of the submission in the beginning of the name (e.g., PanelPapadias.pdf).
  3. A hard copy printed single-sided. On the back of each page write in pencil the name of the paper and the page number (e.g., 100_Papadias 1/12, etc.).
  4. The signed copyright form.

The copyright form and the hard copy should be mailed to:

Please adhere to the page limits STRICTLY. Do not forget to include the copyright notice at the bottom of the left column of the first page. The soft copy should NOT include page numbers. It should be formatted for LETTER (i.e., US paper) size. The PDF file should have all fonts embedded 100% with no subsets, no security applied. Please test that the file prints properly before you send it. If it is not possible to create a PDF file, send a postscript file.

Formatting Instructions

Morgan Kaufmann's formatting instructions for the VLDB Proceedings may be found in the file format.txt. These guidelines must be adhered to by both the submitted and the final version of your accepted paper. These guidelines apply to all the categories appearing in the Proceedings. Page limits are: 12 pages for research papers and full papers for the Industrial, Applications and Experience track, 4 pages for panel sessions and extended abstracts in the Industrial, Applications and Experience track, and 4 pages for demonstration descriptions.

In order to help you format your submissions, we have provided three additional files, vldb.sty, vldb.cls, and vldb_format.doc.

  • vldb.sty is a LATEX style file, defining environments which conform to Morgan Kaufmann's guidelines. It should work with both LATEX version 2.09 and LATEX2e.

vldb.sty should be made to work by including it through a \documentstyle directive like this:
    \documentstyle[vldb]{article}.

This style file will insert the required copyright notice automatically.

Note that the "\topmargin -55pt" command in the style file is not a standard option and does not have a counterpart option (\bottommargin). If you experience problems with it, such as printing with no top margin, you might try defining standard LaTeX margins by setting "tmargin=0.75in,bmargin=1.125in" within the "\geometry" clause.

  • vldb.cls is the adaptation of the vldb.sty file to the LATEX2e class format.

vldb.cls should be made to work by including it through a direct \documentclass directive, like this:

    \documentclass{vldb}.

  • vldb_format.doc is a Word version of Morgan Kaufmann's guidelines, appropriately formatted.

  • vldb_format.tex is a LATEX2 version of vldb_format.doc (it uses the vldb.cls class file).

You may, as you wish, use these style files in their entirety, or copy out individual definitions or styles into your own document. However, even if you use one of these files, the responsibility remains with yourself to ensure that the final version of your paper meets the guidelines as described in format.txt.

The copyright notice to be included in your paper is in the file copyright_notice.txt.

The transfer of copyright form may be found in the file copyright_form.txt. You should return a signed hard copy with the final version of your paper.

For ease of downloading, copies of all of these files are included in the archive all_files.zip.
