Abstract

In this paper we have tried to give an idea of some of the VLDBs which are used for advancement of developing countries. There are not many VLDBs which fall in this category and are public knowledge. The number of VLDBs in developing countries is however are increasing very rapidly. The United Nations and the specialized agencies within the United Nations System are the prime mover and supporter behind this effort. There are also other intergovernmental agencies and non-governmental agencies that are active in this area. Some developing countries have made significant progress and many of them are planning for many more. There are many difficulties in building VLDBs in developing countries, but progress is being made, though at a slow pace. Early recognition of potential problems as those outlined above, can make a critical difference in the eventual success and pay-off of the national VLDB efforts.
