Edinburgh

Edinburgh is full of surprises. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, offering a number of attractions, including Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street. See what the castle currently looks like from this Webcam view of the Castle or see the Webcam Tour of Scotland for other Scottish attractions.

Interested in the arts and theatre? Then Edinburgh hosts a number of festivals, come early and visit the main Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe, both of which will offer a variety of entertainment. The International Festival will be from the 15th August - 4th September 1999, whilst the fringe is provisionally booked from the 8th - 30th August 1999.

Military music lovers will enjoy the Edinburgh Tattoo whilst book lovers will enjoy the Book Festival, alternatively check out the film festival.

If you enjoy walking, but do not have the time to visit one of many Munros further north, then the Pentland Hills outside Edinburgh are well worth a visit. There are also a number of walking tours of Edinburgh available daily, including Ghost and History walks and visits to the Underground Vaults. Many of these depart from the High Street near St Giles Cathedral.

Other places to visit include the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre, Scottish Telecom World of Communications, Laser Quest, The Bank of Scotland Museum (Scotland's oldest bank), The National Gallery of Scotland, John Knox's house, Greyfriars Kirk, Gladstone's Land, The Georgian House, The Royal Museum, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, The Edinburgh Experience, Royal Botanical Gardens, The Dean Gallery, Lauriston Castle, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh Zoo and The Palace of Holyroodhouse (The Queen's official residence in Scotland).

Just outside Edinburgh, attractions include: Scottish Agriculture Museum, Gelnkinchie Distillery Visitor Centre, Edinburgh Crystal Visitor Centre, Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World, Museum of Flight, Scottish Mining Museum, Hopeton House, Linlithgow Palace, Melrose Abbey, Craigmillar Castle, Blair Castle, Deep-Sea World and the Forth Bridge (where boat trips round the bridge, sealife cruises and trips to Inchcolm Island can be found).
