CALL FOR DOCTORAL POSTERS

Ph.D. students will have the opportunity to display poster descriptions of their research at the VLDB 2002 Conference being held in Hong Kong, August 20&endash;23, 2002. The goal is to give doctoral students an opportunity to present their latest research results to the research community, and to get technical advice from leading researchers who will be attending the conference. This opportunity is targeted especially for (though not limited to) Ph.D. students whose work has had little or no exposure via refereed publications. Ph.D. students planning to attend VLDB 2002 are invited to submit an extended abstract describing the work they would like to present on their poster. Authors of accepted abstracts will prepare a poster describing their work for display at the conference, and will be able to discuss their work with VLDB 2002 attendees during breaks and demonstration sessions (to avoid conflicts with other scheduled sessions). The final format of accepted posters will be described later. A list of the accepted Ph.D. posters will appear in the conference proceedings (title, authors, addresses, and URL only).

Each submitted extended abstract must be NO LONGER THAN THREE PAGES in 11 point font or larger, and contain an overview of the research being presented, including:

  • The research questions being addressed,
  • The research methodology being applied,
  • Preliminary ideas and results achieved so far, and
  • Conjectures and goals for completing the work.

Each submission must also include the authors' affiliation(s) and a list of all of the authors' refereed publications (all of which is included in the 3 page limit). Submissions may be in PS, PDF or Word format, and should be emailed to barga@microsoft.com. Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, and clarity. Submissions may be co-authored, but all co-authors must be students. The final deadline for submission is May 17, 2002 (9:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time). Authors will be notified of acceptance by June 14, 2002. Please feel free to direct any questions to Roger Barga at barga@microsoft.com.
