Dear collegues, we are now approaching the final stretch of the preparations for VLDB 2003. The hot phase has started, with a record number of about 460 submissions waiting to be reviewed by the more than one hundred program committee members. They will have the difficult task of selecting the topmost 50 submissions. Looks like we will again have a conference of the highest quality! That's about the right time to start our regular newsletter to keep you up-to-date on all progress we are making. Sure enough, most if not all can also be glanced from our Web site http://www.vldb.informatik.hu-berlin.de. But a newsletter is a more personal affair, and we try to make VLDB 2003 also a very personal success to each one of you who plans to attend the conference and visit Berlin, a fascinating metropolis, in September 2003. In order to reveal the wide spectrum of the VLDB conference, you find the geographical and topic statistics of this year's paper submissions.
