This years VLDB will be again a truely international event. About 300 researchers from 37 countries have already registered. The East Europe program turns out to be a great success. Nearly 50 collegues from these countries will be supported by the funding program set up in order to facilitate participation in VLDB 2003. Many of you may have already looked into this years program (http://www.vldb.informatik.hu-berlin.de/progr_program.html). In this newsletter we would like to introduce the colocated workshops, keynotes, tutorials and panels to you. Most of the colocated workshops will be held on Monday, September 8th, some start on sunday already. They cover themes like XML and Databases, Peer-to-Peer-computing, data warehouses, semantic web, e-services, DB and programming languages as well as document engineering. You find a short description and links to the workshop home pages at http://www.vldb.informatik.hu-berlin.de/locev_colocworkshps.html . Note that DBPL already starts Saturday, September 6 and that the PhD workshop will take place after VLDB. In this year there will be three keynote speeches and the speech by the recipient of the ten-years award. The first keynote by Evangelos Eleftheriou entitled “Millipede” - A Nanotechnology-based Approach to Data Storage, will confront the database community with a potentially radical change of storage technology in the next decade. Neson Mattos will focus in his talk on "Integrating Information for on Demand Computing" more on medium term developments from the viewpoint of a vendor. The third keynote presented by Scott Shenker on "The Data-Centric Revolution in Networking" highlights the challenges associated with the shift from host to data centric networking. You will find details about the speakers and their talks at http://www.vldb.informatik.hu-berlin.de/.... . For each of the tutorials and the panels you will find detailed information under http://www.vldb.informatik.hu-berlin.de/... Have a nice summer. See you during VLDB 2003, Peter C.
