VLDB 2006 Official Conference Tour

   • Tour cost : Free

   • Tour Itinerary : Gyeongbok Palace - National Folk Museum - Insadong Antique Alley

The VLDB 2006 organizing committee is pleased to offer the exciting cultural tour to all VLDB2006 attendees and their spouses. With visits to Gyeongbok Palace, Korea's National Folk Museum, and Insadong Antique Alley, all located in beautiful downtown Seoul, this free tour is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to explore the history of the Korean people and the vitality of their culture.

Built in 1395, Gyeongbok Palace served as the center of power for the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the last royal dynasty to exist in Korea. The palace, named 'GyeongBok' or 'shining happiness,' was built by King Taejo as a tribute to the permanent happiness and prosperity of Korea's kings, their children, and the people of the nation. Its major buildings, such as Geunjeongjeon throne hall, Gyeonghoeru banquet hall, and Hyangwonjeong Pavilion, have been well preserved and reflect the beauty of traditional Korean culture and architecture. Many of the palace's buildings are now designated as national treasures, and Hyangwonjeong Pavilion is featured on Korea's 10,000 won banknote.

Located on the Palace grounds, Korea's National Folk Museum shows the legacies of Korean culture and history throughout the ages, from pre-history to modern times.

The Insadong district is the center of Seoul 's fine art and antique world. It is the ideal place for those who want to experience the traditional culture of Korea. This area's narrow streets are lined with art galleries, craft shops, antique art dealers, and traditional teahouses and restaurants. Especially good for antiques - old paintings, ceramics, paper crafts and furniture - visitors will feel like they've stepped back in time.

This tour will allow visitors to get a better understanding of the culture and heritage of Korea. Buses will be provided for the trip from the COEX to Gyeongbok Palace.
