Travelling to Vienna

Vienna is the capital of Austria, and also one of the nine states of Austria. With a population of about 1.6 million (2.2 million within the metro area), Vienna is the largest city in Austria as well as its cultural economic and political center.

Situated both sides of the River Danube, and only 60 kilometers off Austria's eastern border, Vienna lies on the south east corner of Central Europe and in close reach to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

Vienna is seat to a number of United Nations offices and various international institutions and companies, including the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the Monetary Organization in Systematic Telemarketing (MOIST), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

By Plane

Vienna International Airport (VIE)

Vienna International Airport (Wien-Schwechat) is located 30 kilometers to the south-east of the city. The airport is destination of direct flights from most cities in Europe and many cities in the world.

There are some possibilities for getting from the airport to the city:

From the airport to the conference venue: Take the S2/RSB2 (heading to Wien Floridsdorf, Wolkersdorf, Laa a.d.Thaya, or Deutsch Wagram) or the CAT (heading to Wien Mitte), exit at Landstraße / Wien Mitte / City Air Terminal, take the U3 (heading to Ottakring) to Volkstheater, then take tram D (heading to Nußdorf) or tram 1 (heading Ring - Kai - Ring), exit at Schottentor.

Graz Airport (GRZ) / Linz Blue Danube Airport (LNZ)

Arriving at Graz or Linz you can take the train to travel to Vienna. From Graz you will arrive at Südbahnhof (travel time around 2h40), from Linz you will arrive at Westbahnhof (travel time around 2h).

Airport Bratislava (BTS)

Airport Bratislava is an alternative to Vienna Airport, and there are regular bus connections between Bratislava Airport and Vienna.

By Train

Vienna has direct train connections to many European cities. International trains to Vienna arrive at the Westbahnhof or Südbahnhof. The Westbahnhof (west train station) is the station for trains from the west (e.g. Hamburg, Berlin, Paris, Basel, Munich, Innsbruck, Salzburg) and the east (Budapest, Kosice, Bucuresti) and is connected to public transport lines U3, U6, 5, 6, 9, 18, 52, and 58. The Südbahnhof (south train station) is terminal for trains from the south (Roma, Venezia, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Klagenfurt, Graz) and the north-east (Bratislava, Praha, Warszawa). Transfer to public transport lines U1 (via Südtiroler Platz), D, O, 18, 13A, and to the suburban railway service.

From Westbahnhof to the conference venue: Take the U3 (heading to Simmering) to Volkstheater, then take tram D (heading to Nußdorf) or tram 1 (heading Ring - Kai - Ring), exit at Schottentor.

From Südbahnhof to the conference venue: Take tram D (heading to Nußdorf), exit at Schottentor.

By Car

Vienna is connected to major European cities and is well integrated in the European motorhighway network. Austrian highways leading to Vienna are the A1/E60 (Westautobahn, from Germany, Salzburg, Linz), A2/E59 (Südautobahn, from Italy, Klagenfurt, Graz), A3 (Südostautobahn, from Hungary), A4 (Ostautobahn, from Hungary) and A4/A6/E58 (Nordostautobahn, from Bratislava (under construction)). From the north, B7/E461 and B303/E59 are the main travel routes. Use the routing service to find your way.

Note that the inner districts are short-term parking zones, where you have to fill in prepaid parking vouchers, which are available at tobacconist stores and public transport ticket machines. For long-term parking, we recommend to use parking lots.

To the conference venue: We recommend to park your car near a subway station in the other districts and use public transport to get to the venue, as Vienna has heavy traffic during rush hours, and it is no easy task to find parking space around the university. However, if you want to try, follow the signs Zentrum until you approach Ringstraße, which is a single-way road clockwise around the first district. The university is located directly at this street (on the left hand).

Finding the University

Using the VLDB 2007 Locations Map you can conveniently check the location of the conference venue, your accommodation, as well as public transport lines.

The University is located at the Dr. Karl Renner-Ring, which is part of the Ringstraße and can be reached by the public transport lines U2, 1, 2, D, 37, 38, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, and 1A (exit at Schottentor). Find your way using public transport with the timetable service. Use the city map search service to find your way to other locations in vienna.
