Abstract

For most transaction-oriented data processing systems, the processing requirements can conveniently be expressed by stating the actions to be taken for each transaction. This paper presents the framework of a problem-oriented language for specifying such actions. This problem statement is independent of the hardware configuration and of the physical implementation of the data base, resulting in a high degree of "portability," and allowing modifications to be made, with relative ease.

It is shown that such a problem statement can be automatically transformed into a set of simple modules called standard processes. Together with the files of the data base, these standard processes give a network representation of the application system. This network is then separated into a set of run units (corresponding to conventional programs), taking into account the costs and availability of various computing resources. The processes making up each run unit are executed under the control of an application supervisor, which handles all inter-process communication and data base manipulation.

The structuring of the problem which is provided by this approach allows the use of a variety of parallel processing techniques without any special language features to denote parallelism. In addition, the standard process concept provides a particularly simple means for automatic program generation.
